Gialos, the old port of Fira in Santorini is just below the town of Fira, the capital, commonly known as the old port of Fira. Until a few decades ago, it was the main commercial port of the island. When Santorini started to develop in terms of tourism, this small harbor became a tourist port, while the main port was adjourned to the location Athinios.
Nowadays, the port of Gialos does not receive commercial ferries. It mainly functions in summer and serves only the many cruise ships that arrive on the island, the excursion boats to the volcano and Thirassia, and a few fishing boats.
The downhill location of Gialos makes it tiring to get up and down Fira. For that reason, the most common way is to take the cable car from the old port up to the town of Fira. The cable car is also very convenient for people with mobility issues. For a more traditional way, someone could use the stairs. Walking the route is about 20 minutes uphill.
